inquiry across the Saint John of God Hospitaller Services Group. Our
mission is to support the Hospitaller Services Group in achieving a
service informed by research which will identify, respond to and
support the needs of all individuals in the manner of Saint John of
God. The Research Foundation funds research into mental health,
intellectual disability and old age. The Company also supports
research throughout Saint John of God Services through its Research
Department and Library & Information Services. We advocate for the
men, women and children who use our services, we share research
findings and we facilitate professional training through our annual
conferences and seminar series._

JOB DESCRIPTION

DATA SCIENTIST

(FIXED TERM CONTRACT **APPLY ON THE WEBSITE** MONTHS)

EMPLOYER: St John of God Research Foundation, Stillorgan, Co. Dublin.

LOCATION: Whitaker House, Saint John of God Hospitaller Services
Group, Stillorgan, Co. Dublin. The postholder will work in closely
with the Library & Information Services.

REPORTING TO: General Manager of SJOG Research Foundation, Dr Lesley
O?Hara

HOURS: Normal hours of work will be Monday ? Friday, 9 am till

THE ROLE

The Saint John of God Research Foundation clg supports research in the
areas of mental health, intellectual disability and old age. We want
to maximize the value of the data collected as part of the research
projects we support. To this end, we are recruiting a Data Scientist
on a two-year fixed term basis (initially) who will use their expert
knowledge of data repositories to produce a plan for the development
of an institutional data repository to store and manage research data,
thereby making it available for future research in a manner that is
fully compliant with relevant legislation. The Data Scientist will be
required to deliver seminars on the topics of data analysis and data
management and to consult with researchers as they develop research
proposals. The Data Scientist will also lead the upgrade work of the
current research registration database.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The role incorporates the following key components:

INSTITUTIONAL REPOSITORY DEVELOPMENT

* Build an understanding of the types of data collected in the
organisation
* Produce a plan for the long term management of this data which
should include specific advice on the format data should be collected,
stored, and accessed.
* Be clear on legal and GDPR requirements along with consenting
processes to long term data repositories.
* Identify system requirements and work with ICT to ensure that
recommendations are compatible with available infrastructure.
* Produce a final report detailing the steps to be taken to build
and maintain an institutional repository, including an estimate of the
costs involved.
* Produce a guidance document and training seminar for data
providers.
* Develop strategies to improve data quality.

EDUCATION & SUPPORT

* Deliver workshops/seminars to staff on data management, data
analysis and the use of open datasets for research
* Offer data planning consultation sessions to researchers to
support the development of their research proposals
* Provide advice on the ongoing management and stabilisation of
existing datasets.

UPGRADE OF RESEARCH REGISTRATION DATABASE

* Oversee the upgrade of the existing research registration database
* Liaise with ICT to identify an off-the-shelf package which will
meet service needs and current infrastructure

ENGAGEMENT & PARTICIPATION

* Participate fully in the Corporate Strategy Group
* Contributing to steering committee and other governance group
meetings
* Build good relations and liaise effectively with other parts of
the Saint John of God Group and external agencies.
* Be committed to SJOG Research Foundation and demonstrate
enthusiasm and passion for the role.

KEY COMPETENCIES:

QUALIFICATIONS:

* A PhD or Masters degree in health information systems or a related
discipline will be required combined.

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE (ESSENTIAL):

* Specialist knowledge in research data management and developing
institutional data repositories
* Thorough understanding of open science and the requirements of
building and maintaining open datasets
* An in-depth understanding of quantitative and qualitative methods
* At least three years? appropriate professional experience is
required with proven experience in building and managing datasets
* Effective communication skills including report writing and
presentation skills
* A publication track record, preferably in peer-reviewed journals
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, attention to
detail and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are
essential. The post holder must also be able to meet deadlines

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

* Experience of delivering workshops or seminars on the topics of
data analysis, data management, and the use of open datasets.
