COMMUNITY EDUCATION?S ROLE IN SUPPORTING LONE PARENTS IN IRELAND
FACING EDUCATIONAL AND SOCIAL DISADVANTAGE
This research project is being funded by the Beachaire Fund, a
charitable fund operating under the framework of donor managed funds
which is administered by the Community Foundation for Ireland. One of
the objectives of the Beachaire Fund is to support education-based
initiatives, particularly those that improve access to education and
support better educational outcomes for children.
It is recognised that parents play an important role in educating
their children and in supporting their children?s participation in
formal education. Lone parents with young children face many
challenges in supporting their children?s participation in formal
education. These challenges are particularly acute for lone parents
facing social and economic disadvantage, sometime with low levels of
formal education themselves.
In seeking to answer the question of what changes can be effected by
policy makers to improve the opportunities for lone parents facing
social and economic disadvantage to obtain the life benefits that
education offers them and their children, the Beachaire Fund has
decided to explore the impact on their lives of participating in
community based education programmes. Community education has been
shown to provide second-chance education to many women in
disadvantaged communities and to open up new and diverse pathways
within education, economic activity and representation in community
development and political representation.
