TRAVELLER EDUCATION WORKER

The Traveller Visibility Group (TVG) has been awarded funding to run
the Cork Pilot NTRIS STAR Education Programme. We are currently
recruiting for a Traveller Education Worker. We invite all interested

THE ORGANISATION AND PROJECT

The NTRIS STAR Education Pilot in Cork has been hosted by TVG since
January **Apply on the website** with the aim of finding working
models of practice to improve the outcomes of Traveller and Roma
students in education. The current project has been extended recently
to run until June **Apply on the website**. TVG has employed both a
Roma and Traveller Education Worker for the project and this team is
supported by a Home School Liaison Officer along with co-management
from Tusla Education Support Service (TESS). Together TVG and TESS
work with **Apply on the website** participating Schools, the
Traveller and Roma students in these schools and their parents to
highlight challenges and find opportunities to improve the education
outcomes of these students and future Traveller and Roma students.

TVG is an independent, Cork-based, Traveller-led community development
organisation. TVG will pursue social justice and equality with
Travellers so that we can live free from racism and discrimination.

THE ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the
Traveller Community in identifying and addressing the challenges and
opportunities facing Traveller students in the education system.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

* Building relationships with local Traveller families and school
students and concerned agencies to create clear communication networks
to ensure participation from Traveller community to inform the
Education Pilot programme.
* Promoting and representing the work of the STAR pilot to local
representative organisations and education partners.
* Build productive working relationships with the school teams
involved in the STAR Education Pilot.
* Contribute fully to the development of the local area STAR
Education Pilot programme plan and to the implementation of the plan.
* Undertake tasks agreed by the pilot team appropriate to the skills
of the education support worker.
* Focus exclusively on the work of the STAR pilot action plan.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

* Leaving Certificate or QQI Level 5 or equivalent qualification.
* Experience of working in the statutory, community or voluntary
sectors particularly with the Traveller and Roma communities.
* Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
* Commitment to anti-racism and social justice practice.

SKILLS/COMPETENCIES

* Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to work with other staff as part of a team and build
relationships both within the team and with external stakeholders.
* Strong organisational analysis and problem solving abilities
* Ability to identify possible challenges, plan ahead and be willing
to think creatively.
* Workshop facilitation experience
* Be accountable and responsible for own work within in the projects
and have the ability to follow through and complete tasks.
* Excellent time management and team work skills.
* Commitment to the delivery of a quality service in the project.

DESIRABLE

* Strong writing and computer literacy
* Youth work skills and experience
* Passion for social justice in education

TERMS
