JOB TITLE: COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT WORKER

REPORTING TO: Programme Leader ? Social Inclusion Community
Activation Programme (SICAP)

LOCATION: Offaly

Offaly Local Development Company delivers the Social Inclusion and
Community Activation Programme (SICAP) on behalf of Offaly Local and
Community Development Committee (LCDC). The Community Development
Worker will contribute to the achievement of the aims of the SICAP
programme, which is to reduce poverty and promote social inclusion and
equality through local, regional and national engagement and
collaboration. The successful candidate will play a vital role as part
of the Offaly SICAP team, in supporting disadvantaged communities and
groups to address issues which affect them, and supporting children,
youth and families to participate in initiatives developed in
response.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

* Pro-active outreach and engagement, consultation and planning with
disadvantaged communities experiencing greatest levels of deprivation
and with disadvantaged groups identified as key priorities under
SICAP, including children and families living in disadvantaged areas,
disadvantaged young people, people with disabilities, lone parents,
homeless and Travellers.
* Development and support work with local community groups,
organisations and networks to address the issues and priorities
identified through this process in collaboration with the agencies
best placed to address these needs.
* Support the development / delivery of initiatives established as a
result, including life-long learning supports, youth engagement and
development projects and social enterprise activities.
* Provision of support to groups to move through the structured
stages of progression and to participate in local, regional and
national decision making structures which can improve outcomes for
their community of interest.
* An ability to support and encourage individuals to participate in
their local communities.

QUALIFICATIONS

* Third level qualification in Community Development, Youth Studies,
Social Studies, Rural Development, Adult Education, or other relevant
disciplines essential.

WORK EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

* Minimum 4/5 years? experience working with disadvantaged
communities and marginalised groups in a developmental capacity.

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL:

* Have an empathy and understanding of barriers facing disadvantaged
and marginalised groups
* Work from community development principles with an emphasis on
empowerment and capacity-building
* Be highly motivated towards successful outcomes for the target
groups and communities using innovation, initiative and drive to
overcome barriers and obstacles and create positive, sustainable
opportunities and outcomes.
* Demonstrate strong organisational and communication skills.
* Preferably have experience of working with disadvantaged young
people in a developmental capacity
* Car owner/full driving licence
