JOB DESCRIPTION

EMPLOYER: Before 5 Family Centre
JOB TITLE: Full Time Permanent Creche Assistant
LOCATION: Before 5 Family Centre, Churchfield, Co Cork,
RESPONSIBLE TO: Creche Supervisor
HOURS OF WORK: Monday- Friday 9am-4.**Apply on the website**pm

QUALIFICATION: Minimum Fetac Level 6 in Childcare
EXPERIENCE: 2 years experience in Early Years Services

JOB PURPOSE: THE ASSISTANT?S ROLE IS TO:

* Promote the welfare and foster the development of the child,
* Assist Cr?che Supervisor in cr?che routines.
* Maintain the cr?che environment, toilets, and hallway areas.

CORE JOB REQUIREMENTS:

* Childcare assistants work under supervision and within the line
management system of the Before 5 Family centre.
* Childcare assistants work with permanent staff to ensure the
safety and well being of the children in their care and to implement
and adhere to the standards and polices laid down by management and

* Childcare assistants are required to treat all information they
receive with the strictest confidence and professionalism.
* Childcare assistants need to be aware of the Child Protection
Policy and be vigilant for signs of N.A.I. (non accidental injury)
sexual abuse, neglect and social, emotional and developmental delay.
Childcare assistants need to immediately report any and every aspect
of concern to their line manager.
* Childcare assistants are required to engage in activities in each
session that allow the children to experience creative, imaginative,
physical, social and cognitive play.
* Childcare assistants are responsible for ensuring good standards
of hygiene, regularly checking and ensuring equipment is safe,
preparing cr?che and tidying of same after each session in compliance
with health and safety regulations.
* Childcare assistants are required to attend regular meetings to
discuss curriculum, activities and child development.
* Childcare assistants are required to assist and take part in
organisation of special events, outings and fundraising activities.
* Childcare assistants have a high regard for their own personal and
professional development and for the personal and professional
development of others. Need to identify training needs with the FAS
Supervisor and participate in training opportunities appropriate to
the role.
* Childcare assistants need to show reasonable flexibility in
relation to hours of attendance to meet the needs of the work.
* Childcare assistants need to undertake other duties as may be
requested by the line manager from time to time.

_REQUIREMENTS SPECIFIC TO THIS POST:_

_1. Fostering development in the child_

* Maintain a respect for the child?s need (a) to play (b) to move
independently (c) to express themselves.
* Aid and support children in their play activities.
* Keep voice tone low to discourage shouting in children, encourage
them to approach you and others when speaking. Make eye contact and
name child when calling them.
* Allow children freedom to make their own play choices and to
repeat such tasks.
* Promote focus/concentration in children. Be aware of developing
concentration skills- be prepared to sit back and observe when
necessary.
* Responsible for taking children to toilet. Ensure dignity and
respect for child if a change of clothes is necessary.
* Responsible for changing children?s nappies when necessary.
Again dignity and respect for child is paramount.
* Foster children?s language development -listen to child-
encourage use of full sentences-do not imitate ?baby? talk.
Correct use of language & terms for equipment and toys. Allow
opportunities for conversation to develop by listening and responding
to children (bearing in mind not to disturb play patterns).
* Encourage the language of social graces in interaction with you
and other children e.g. ?please?, ?thank you?, ?excuse
me?.

_2. Assist Cr?che Supervisor in Cr?che routines._

* Allow for supervisor to work uninterrupted with child or group of
children. Ensure cr?che order and routine are maintained when she is
busy.
* Supervisor is responsible for discipline procedures. Be guided by
her approach.
* All parental enquiries to be referred to supervisor. When
supervisor is speaking to parent/parents maintain classroom routine
and supervise children.
* Aiding with craft and art activities-both in preparation and
presenting of activities.
* Become familiar with Highscope programme and principles.
