YOUTH JUSTICE WORKER

CODY GARDA YOUTH DIVERSION PROJECT

FULL-TIME ? FIXED TERM CONTRACT

We have a vacancy for a full-time youth justice worker for a fixed
term of approximately **Apply on the website** months. The worker is
employed by Cherry Orchard Equine Centre Company Limited by Guarantee
(COEC) with specific focus on assisting young people to deal with the
issues surrounding their offending and the need for behavioural
change. The worker will operate out of a designated premises or youth
service under the day to day supervision of the Youth Service Manager.

The vacancy is for **Apply on the website** hours per week for the
duration of the contract. COEC operates the CDYSB Youth Worker salary
scale and the candidate will be placed at point 1 (?**Apply on the
website**,**Apply on the website**) and the salary will be paid pro
rata for hours worked.

The worker will engage with the project committee in conjunction with
existing staff.

IT WILL BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE WORKER TO:

* Identify, engage and work directly with project participants
selected from the primary and secondary project target group;
* Implement programmes and activities in the catchment area in line
with the GYDP guidelines and approved by the project committee;
* Report to the project committee and attend the project and
referral assessment committee meetings;
* Act as a link between the participants and agencies and work with
local agencies in developing appropriate responses to participants?
needs;
* Keep project records and provide updates and reports as requested;
* Take part in ongoing approved training for developing the Garda
Youth Diversion Project.
* Engage in outreach work to identify young people for inclusion in
the project through the referral committee, and
* Carry out any other duties deemed necessary by the employer /
youth organisation, Garda? or project committee for the development
of the project.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

* Good interpersonal skills, including ability to liaise with a wide
range of contacts and build and maintain effective working
relationships.
* Excellent standards of accuracy and attention to detail.
* Ability to be proactive, use own initiative and work effectively
within a pressurised environment.
* Positive and flexible approach to team working.
* Good written communications skills, including ability to draft
summary information and correspondence.
* Good computer skills, including MS Word, MS Excel, MS Teams and
Outlook.

QUALIFICATIONS

* A third level qualification (Degree level or equivalent) in social
work, social care, youth work/community work, education or related
discipline IS REQUIRED
* Three years? experience of working with vulnerable and at-risk
young people IS DESIRABLE
* An understanding of issues affecting marginalised youth and
dedication to being a positive advocate for same is essential.

REQUIREMENT OF ALL COEC STAFF:

* Commitment to the purpose of COEC and work within values, policies
and procedures of the organisation and in the context of current
legislation and regulations.
* To report any area if concern to your line manager in a timely
fashion.
* To show flexibility in relation to working hours.
* Identify training needs through your supervision and participate
in training opportunities appropriate to the role.
* To be vigilant to any Health and Safety and Welfare risks in the
workplace and bring any concerns to your line manager or Health and
Safety officer.
* To undertake other duties as may be requested by the line manager
from time to time.
* To undertake your work in a manner that is friendly, flexible and
professional.

GARDA YOUTH DIVERSION BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The Project is a Garda Youth Diversion Project (GYDP) with a set
catchment area of Cherry Orchard, Ballyfermot. The GYDP?s are
community based multi-agency crime prevention initiatives which seek
to divert young people from becoming involved (or further involved) in
anti-social and/or criminal behaviour by providing suitable activities
to facilitate personal development and promote civic responsibility.

The Project is a Youth Crime Prevention Project and as such its
purpose is to engage young people who have offended in a process of
learning and development that will enable them to examine their own
offending and to make positive lifestyle choices that will protect
them from involvement in criminal, harmful or socially unacceptable
behaviours.

The project participants are made up of both a primary and a secondary
target group. The primary project target group, which forms the
majority of project participants, are young people who have entered
the Garda Juvenile Diversion Programme and are considered at risk of
remaining within the justice system. The secondary project target
group are young people who, although they have not been referred
directly by the Juvenile Liaison Officer, have come to the attention
of the Garda?, the community or local agencies as a result of their
behaviour, and are considered at risk of entering the justice system
at a future date.

The project is situated in specified premises both in Cherry Orchard
Equine Centre and its actions are guided by a Project Committee
comprising of representatives from the community, Garda? and local
agencies.

Youth Justice Workers will be responsible for the delivery of
programmes in the context of:

* _supporting GYDP participants in accessing further education and
training_
* _increasing - participant employability_
* Supporting participants in pursuing sustainable employment.

This position requires a person with a unique mix of skills that has
the capacity to provide support to participants and to open up
employment, training and education opportunities for participants who
are ready to access those opportunities_. _The ideal candidate will be
self-motivated with the capacity to work within a team environment. He
or she should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
