ROLE OVERVIEW:

Children's cancers affect approximately **Apply on the website**
children and teenagers under the age of **Apply on the website** each
year in Ireland. An additional **Apply on the website** cases of
cancer are diagnosed in older teenagers (**Apply on the website**
years) which means that approximately **Apply on the website**
children (**Apply on the website**) are diagnosed with a cancer each
year. While survival rates for children and adolescents with cancer
have improved dramatically in recent decades, there are still
significant gaps in in service provision and supports for children,
adolescents and their families.

Meanwhile, those in their late teens and young adults face challenges
in transitioning between childhood and adult services, and there are
lasting effects throughout the life of someone diagnosed with cancer
as a child, adolescent or young adult.

The Irish Cancer Society?s Strategy for the period **Apply on the
website** ? **Apply on the website** seeks to ensure that all child,
adolescent and young adult patients receive timely treatment; take
action to address the financial impact of a childhood cancer diagnosis
on families; address gaps in adolescent and young adult cancer
services; examine the lifelong needs of CAYA patients and survivors
and; advocate for the state to provide the right emotional and
bereavement support for anyone impacted by cancer, including the
parents and siblings of a child with cancer.

This new role will support the work of the Advocacy Department in the
Irish Cancer Society, with a specific focus on childhood and
adolescent cancers. The successful candidate will play an important
role in building an understanding of the unmet needs of CAYA patients
and survivors; working in partnership with colleagues in the sector;
supporting the implementation of a CAYA cancer strategy for the
organisation and; the delivery of advocacy campaigns and policy
positions.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT

* Supporting the work of, and frequently briefing, the Society?s
Childhood and Adolescent Cancer Advisory Group;
* Working closely with the Policy and Public Affairs Manager,
partners in childhood cancer charities and internal stakeholders to
develop and deliver a childhood, adolescent and young adult cancer
advocacy strategy for the coming years;
* Supporting the development of new relationships and growth of
existing relationships with stakeholders across a range of areas;
* Represent the Society at events, on external groups and in
engagement with relevant alliances;
* Act as a contact point with international and European partners,
such as SIOP Europe;

RESEARCH DELIVERY AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT

* Building on work to date, lead projects which map out and analyse
the current provision of diagnosis, cancer care and aftercare for
childhood, adolescent and young adult cancers;
* Managing projects which examine the financial, psychological and
social impacts of a childhood cancer diagnosis;
* Managing projects which examine the long-term impacts of a CAYA
cancer diagnosis;
* Undertaking detailed desktop research to provide strong evidence
for advocacy asks and campaigns;

ADVOCACY CAMPAIGNING AND POLICY INSIGHTS

* Delivering advocacy campaigns with the goal of ensuring the
adoption of Irish Cancer Society policy positions on childhood
cancers;
* Working with childhood cancer survivors, parents, healthcare
workers, academics and public officials to better understand and
establish the levels of unmet need for children, adolescents and young
adults with cancer;
* Developing campaigns to address unmet needs;
* Assisting the Policy and Public Affairs Manager to meet the key
advocacy targets of the Society;
* Drafting briefing papers, submissions in response to public
consultations and devising pre-Budget proposals on issues that impact
childhood cancer patients and their families;
* Keeping abreast of national and international developments in the
childhood cancer sphere and keeping the Policy and Public Affairs
Manager and wider advocacy team fully briefed;

GENERAL

* Supporting the Advocacy team?s response to individual advocacy
queries, as required.
* Working with the Policy and Public Affairs Manager and Grassroots
Advocacy Coordinator to support grassroots advocacy campaigns;
* Working with the Policy and Public Affairs Manager and Policy
Officer to support the development of policy proposals and positions
in the area of childhood and adolescent cancers;

PERSON SPECIFICATION:

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

* Third level degree or higher in health/social policy, social work,
public policy or nursing.? However, we are willing to consider
applicants of different educational backgrounds who can clearly
demonstrate their interest and passion to undertake the role;
* In lieu of degree, additional relevant work experience will be
considered;
* Experience in the effective delivery of advocacy campaigns;
* Experience in research, report and position paper writing;
* Knowledge and/or experience of the Irish health service and
children?s health services is desirable, but not a necessity;
* Experience of working in a membership, campaigning or voluntary
organisation is desirable, but not a necessity;
* Experience of advocating on behalf of vulnerable people or
children is desirable, but not a necessity.
